Born on March 19, 1957 in Rampurwa VDC-6 of Nawalparasi, Devendra Raj Kandel is the son of Prithvi Raj and Dhan Devi Kandel. He has a son and a daughter. He is contesting from Nawalparasi-4 in the CA Election 2013 representing Nepali Congress.
He comes from a family with a long political background. His
grandmother Radha Devi Kandel was a member of NC's Parliamentary
Committee in 1959. His father Prithvi Raj was elected as member of the
parliament in 1959.
During the Pachayata Period, Kandel was first elected as Pradhan Pancha in 1982 and held the post for two terms. After the restoration of democracy, he elected from Nawalparasi-4 in the legislative elections of 1994 and 1999. He was appointed as whip of NC Parliamentary Party.
He became the State Minister for Home Affairs twice in 1998 and 2000. During his stay in the office, he put rewards on the heads of the Maoist rebel leaders. Later in 2004, the Maoists attempted to kill him and fired 17 rounds of bullets on him, seven of which hit the mark. He still carries one of the bullets on his chest.
He contested in the CA Election 2008 from Nawalparasi-5 but lost by some three thousand votes.
Anyway his social and political background is public news but the direct meeting with munna dai is also not interesting.Our Tara didi and enire kerwani team were busy to welcome him vividly during elections.We school children just love the way dai walk,I was very eager he was just presenting his ideas with smile and we just do namaste came back home.
Years passed .He kept on working for youths but we never miss a chance to meet him anyway a youth from my area is always important ,as a school student or college student we had to follow him for different programs and he was always present in each activities .We just love the teachers and social workers from our areas who instruct all the things to welcome,we listen his good advice to benefits of village areas and school peripheri .Anyway story of Munna Dai is not limited to televisions,newspaper or other orator who regularly helps to know him but Munna Dai himself is a guru for all youth in our area.
Days passed many things changed my reading habit and the ideas of senior citizens of my areas and kirtan parties of different mandalis of my areas always help me to know him.I just love to listen Munna dai and his deeds in his areas and write down as if I know all,I tried to call him and ask many things but the most interesting part of his priesthood,he is a priest and was worshiping in Palhi Temple ,Nawalparasi when I had a call,his arrival in Baba Bard Goriya Temple and Durga Temple,Amarpokharee,Kerwani,Nawalparasi,Lumbini is a great story for the temple we always ran as a child there with our family and relatives.
